I have recently retired after thirty four years of teaching K, 1st and 2nd in Stockton, CA. I live in a condominium in a lovely urban lake setting full of wildlife, with a very peaceful view of the water. As a retired person, I am playing a lot of bridge, and also enjoy gardening, travel and hanging out at Starbuck’s with a mocha latte. My mom is in her nineties now and lives in a care facility in Olympia so I head north frequently. I have sold my condo in Seattle because trying to live in two places was way too complicated!! I swapped the Seattle condo for a house in Northgate (rented to a nice tenant originally from Wapato). At the moment my goals are to become a published writer like my Dad, to travel the U.S. in an R.V. and someday to relocate in the Pacific Northwest. I am so impressed with the beauty of the Yakima Valley, which I totally did not appreciate while growing up in Toppenish. But most of all I am overwhelmed by seeing all of my classmates, who make me very proud to be part of the class of ’64!! |

Steve has taken retirement from the Boeing Company, and he apparently has no obligations that require him to be anywhere at anytime for any purpose. In other words, Steve is very retired, and he reports that his retirement is much too busy to submit a story for the Memory Book or website. Steve did attend the reunion, and photos of Steve are posted on the website and included in the Reunion CD. |

|
When last written about in the Yakima Herald, Bill was an associate professor of virology at Utah State University. He was honored in 1988 as the Yakima Valley Community College's distinguished alumnus. Bill earned his AA degree in science from YVCC in 1966. He then earned his BS from Washington State University, and went to work for the Atomic Energy Commission. He returned to WSU to earn a doctorate in biochemistry in 1975. He joined the faculty of Utah State University in Logan, Utah in 1977. Bill reports that in 1996 he left the University to work for HyClone which is a biotech company in Logan, Utah. This has proven a good move for Bill, and he can tell you more when you see him at the reunion. "Clayton summed up the history for me. I'll resume from there...I have lived within 150 miles of Logan, Utah since leaving USU in 68. I had no family here when I arrived, just circumstance and a great place to live. Now, seven children (ages 23-35) later... five plus many grandkids and in-laws live in Logan. One daughter in Las Vegas and one son on active duty in Marines. Diane (Fresno native) and I have been married 17 years. She is assistant to the president of USU. For the past 8 years, I have directed R&D for HyClone Laboratories (a biotech company spun off from USU). We are both looking forward to retirement. We golf, I fish, and we both enjoy using our trailerable sailboat as our RV...camping on the waters of Yellowstone, Grand Teton Park and Bear Lake 40 miles from Logan. We ski most weekends in our four month winters...what else is there to do in Utah? We are both many year veterans of the National Ski Patrol, but getting a little old for pulling people off the mountains in toboggans, so not many more years of that. I appreciate all your stories and memories. Although we've been apart for so many years, we have a lot of common threads in our lives. Here is to many more happy years. I am proud of you all. ...Bill" |

It’s been forty years since we yelled our heads off in pep assemblies at Top-Hi gym. Our reunion brings fond memories of Drill Team, Pep Club, GAA, dances, games – both home and away, homework, talking on the phone until your Mom insisted you hang up. Imagine if we had cell phones back then! After high school I went to YVC and Central and married my dearest friend. We built our home in Wapato after living in Seattle and Colorado, had kids, and now grandkids. My grandchildren call me “Ala”, which is Yakama Indian for paternal grandmother. Speaking of which, if I am not at the reunion, it is because our grandchild number four is due at reunion time, and I am an enthusiastic member of the family “welcoming committee”. The doctor says it will be a boy, so this will make 3 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. My husband, Roger, often travels in his work. He likes me to accompany him, and I love to travel. In the past year we have flown to Dallas, Las Vegas, Santa Barbara, Reno, Albuquerque, and Scottsdale. We both admire Native American art, especially jewelry. Our next trip is to San Diego. One of my hobbies is cooking. The first fall that we were married, seriously, I heated Swanson turkey TV dinners and served them to my husband and mother-in-law for Thanksgiving dinner. Okay, I could boil water, but not much more. Fast forward, thanks to cookbooks and mentoring older relatives, I am able to cook wonderful meals without worry. In fact, I prepared an enormous, beautiful buffet wedding dinner for my daughter’s eighty guests this summer. One of my specialties is roasted salmon fillet with cumin, chili pepper rub. Roger’s favorite is prime rib with huckleberry pie for dessert. For the past 15 years I have driven school bus for Wapato. I have good rapport with and enjoy the kids and trips. Some of my grandkids are old enough to ride my bus, so that is a bonus. Another long-term interest of mine is teaching religious education. This year is my 31st year of helping in our church youth program. Lately it has been eighth graders. It is a special ministry and I feel lucky to be able to touch young lives in a positive way. They keep my perspective fresh. On a sad note, I was planning to attend our reunion with my close girlfriend, Ellen (Barton) Wagner. We had stayed in touch since high school and had Friday lunch dates for many years. She died suddenly last year, and I miss her. I send you our traditional family dinner toast: Happiness and good health! Blessings, Theresa (Bradley) Jacob |

At the 10th reunion, Fred wrote, “After graduation, I went to YVC for a while, then went into the Marine Corps. Following Marines, I went to Perry Trade School in Yakima to study Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. While attending Perry, I got married to my first wife, Colleen, and we had two children: David and Haven. Current: Since the last reunion that I attended, much has changed in my life. First I got a divorce, and then I remarried. I moved to Gig Harbor with my wife Carolyn of now 3 years. I have 7 step-grandchildren ... of varying ages. I am presently employed at Super Valu and have been working for over 20 years as an electrician. A while ago I started my part-time business as an electrical contractor. This contractor business will give me something to do when I retire in March! My wife and I enjoy hiking, camping, biking and kyaking. One of our favorite adventures was a 95 mile hike around Mount Rainer on the Wonderland Trail. We look forward to seeing all of you on the 23rd. |

Well, it sure doesn't seem possible 40 years has gone by since high school. After graduation, I attended YVC (where I met my husband, Ron) and worked in a doctor's office in Yakima. Ron and I were married in 1966, while Ron was in the Air Force. We spent most of the next four years in Sacramento, CA. (living in base housing). During this time, I worked for a retail credit reporting company in downtown Sacramento. Our daughter, Jennifer, was born in 1969. We left the Air Force in 1970 and moved to Portland. In 1971, we moved out to the suburbs in Aloha, and then in 1979 we moved to our current home in Beaverton. Ron graduated from law school in 1978 and spent the next 25 years as a Deputy District Attorney for Clackamas County. Up until 1982, I was a secretary for one of the local water districts. We're retired now and really enjoying our three grandchildren, who live in nearby Hillsboro. We've traveled around the country a little bit (nothing overseas) and love going to the Oregon coast, but mainly enjoy our hobbies. I've done oil painting, tole painting, woodworking (mostly backyard birdhouses) and even tried my hand at stained glass work. Most recently, I've been doing quilting. That's really turned out to be a lot of work, but it's a lot of fun. My dad, who turned 89 this year, lives in Yakima now, but we still go to the family farm in Toppenish. We have 80 acres of grapes there. My brother does most of the work managing the farm, even though he lives in Kennewick. We all show up at harvest time and pitch in. I'm really looking forward to seeing
everyone at the reunion.

45th Reunion Update: These are our grandkids (Easter 2009) that we are so fortunate to be close to. Benjamin and Ketra Pope live in Selah with our oldest, Ericka, and husband Larry. Luke, Kolby, and Erik Moore live in Harrah with Erin, our middle child, and her husband, Chris.
Our youngest, Jason-28, lives 10 minutes from here, just north of us. He is single. I have totally retired and love it! No more alarm clocks. Ger works part time for YVCC in Adult Basic Ed. He tutors those that want to get their GED. He has done this for 3 years and really enjoys working with the motivated students.
Carmen Tollefson ========================================== I can't believe we are getting ready for our 40th class reunion - yikes! After H.S. graduation, Ger and I
went to YVCC and then to Central where we both graduated in education. We
came back to Toppenish and have been here ever since. I taught 1st grade two
years, took 15 years off to raise 3 children, and then went back to middle
school 6th grade for 14 years. Ger taught English for 15 years and
then went into counseling at the high school. When Ger retired from H.S. counseling, I took 4 years off (extended vacation),
and we enjoyed some travel, lots of relaxing, and just fun time with him and
our grandkids. In September of 1999 our third grandson, Erik, was born with
cerebral palsy. I mention this because he is one of the reasons I decided to
go back into teaching. This time I went to the high school level and am
currently teaching Special Education. I love it! |

It is hard to believe it has been 40 years! I have been blessed over the years with good health, many friends, and a loving family. As I write this, my husband and I are in Florida celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary; and we are trying to get away from hurricane Jeanne! I graduated from Seattle University in 1970 with a B.S. in biology; but the happiness of that time was canceled out by the tragic drowning of my brother, Randy, Class of '68, who was at UW. His death is still surrounded by mystery. My brother's death put on hold my pursuing a teaching career. After graduation I lived a roller coaster ride of adventure. I traveled around the US with my youngest brother for 6 weeks. Within a week of returning home, I left to travel in Europe for 3 months. Among other things, I visited Checkpoint Charlie at the Berlin Wall. When a former boss encouraged me to take an internship in medical technology, I moved to Miami, Florida in 1971. Living in Miami was a big culture change, as was working at a Veterans Hospital there during the Viet Nam era. I returned to Seattle after completion of my training and worked in the laboratory at Swedish Hospital for the next 9 years. During those year I participated in a variety of activities. I was an avid back-packer and climbed Mt Olympus. One summer I lived in a remote Indian village in Canada, working with youth for a Christian organization. In 1979 I married Gary Preble, who is an attorney in private practice. We have lived in Olympia the last 18 years. We have 3 children: Joshua (24), a senior at UW, Daniel (21), a junior at Stanford, and Rachel (18), who works as a nanny, is studying to be a model, and plans to go to community college. I have worked in a number of hospital labs with very little patient contact. I now work at an oncology clinic, and have discovered that I like having patient contact. They have taught me a lot about faith and courage in the face of death. I was saddened to hear that several of our classmates have also died of cancer. When we first moved to Olympia we visited several churches. One Sunday morning after the service, a woman came up to me came up to me and said, "Toppenish Hi- class of '64." It was Janet Gowan. She thought it was hilarious that I was 39 and pregnant because her son and daughter had already left home. We ended up having getting together several times. It broke my heart when she told me she had cancer. I am a member of WSU Master Gardeners. I am also the state treasurer for a laboratory professional organization. My aspirations for the future: I want to be on short term medical teams - such as "Doctors without borders." "Our" greatest accomplishment: Our children are appearing to be on their way to being self-supporting adults! Sammie Elaine Cron Preble |

After graduation, the draft got me like so many of our class. I joined the US Air Force with hopes of seeing the world at the government’s expense. I was first stationed at Fairchild AFB in Spokane. I tried everything, volunteered for everything, just to get out of Washington, only to spend my whole four years in Spokane. During my tour of duty I met Fran Landon and married. We had two children: Kimberly and Mark. After my discharge from the Air Force, I took an apprentice position as an Architectural hardware consultant. I spent the next ten years in the construction industry as a consultant and specification writer. In 1980 at the down turn of the construction market it was time for a change. I had always hoped to have my own business and since construction was so depressed, my other solution was to go to cosmetology school. What a change! Everyone I knew thought I was crazy. Wes Crowell a hairstylist? It turned out to be the best decision of my life. Fran was also a hairstylist. We owned several salons over the next few years and had lots of people working for us, but it didn’t give me the freedom from the “no work-ee no pay-ee”. So in 1991, Fran and I opened the first Beauty Supply in Spokane. We started our first store in a mall, and in 1994 we opened our second on the south hill of Spokane. It has been this business that has allowed me to pursue other interests. My first love has always been the ministry, so in 1986 I co-founded a church in Spokane Valley. It was during my years as a hairstylist that allowed me to study for the pastorate. Grace Harvest Fellowship became a church of well over a thousand members. In 1991 tragedy struck, Fran was diagnosed with cancer and after a two and a half year battle passed away in 1994. In 1994 I bought a new bright red Corvette, and pursued my new identity. In 1996 a strange thing happened. You may remember 1961-63 I had “gone steady” with Carolyn DeGroot: she had graduated in ’63, so we broke up and she went to Northwest College in Kirkland, then to Alaska. Carolyn having raised three children was taking a new position in Cody, Wyoming. While traveling through Spokane, she called me to see how I was doing. She had no idea that I had taken my red Corvette to Toppenish in ’94 looking for her. We had a wonderful reunion, and in 1997 we were married. We love to travel; I have played golf on the old course in St. Andrews, Scotland and we’ve been to several countries in Europe. With children and grandchildren in Washington D.C.; Fort Collins, CO; and Phoenix, AZ; we travel extensively. We have just purchased an ‘empty nester’ home next to a golf course, no yard work! Life is good. Wes Crowell |

REPORTED by Cloyd: Heard from Jay Daling's wife Debbie last night (Sept. 19) . She had just returned home from Seattle where Jay has been hospitalized for this past week. He's at Harborview in the intensive care unit after being bitten by a brown spider that caused a life threatening infection. Debbie's not sure of when he could see any visitors but call the hospital to find out. With the reunion only a month away she's doesn't think it's likely that he will be recovered in time. From her words she thinks he will recover, but with these kind of infections only the Lord knows for sure. Your prayers and thoughts will certainly help at this time. Jay was not able to attend the reunion, and we have not received an update on his recovery from the spider bite.

It seems that just yesterday was high school graduation. Some days I don't feel any older and THEN some days I really feel old! Mike and I were married in June of 1964 and by 1972 had our three children, Paula, Robin and Alan. Those were the struggling years--Mike worked as a welder in a neighborhood farm shop and I learned to pack fruit--working first for Gini Barbee's (Obert) parents and then for several local fruit warehouses. I packed fruit for 20 years, doing other things in the off season--for 3 years I had a small custom haying operation. By this time Mike had leased the shop from the owner and then later, we purchased it. In addition, we were kept busy with school activities for the kids, 4-H horse programs and junior rodeo. In late 1980 I was hired as a substitute rural mail carrier for Toppenish. I worked at the Toppenish post office for several years, and then transferred to Zillah. After seven years as a sub, I became a full time rural carrier and still work there today. I am looking ahead to the time I can retire (2007). Mike sold the shop and has his general contractor's license, contracting his expertise in welding to various businesses--currently Michelsen Packing in Yakima. Our two daughters both live in Montana and we do spend quite a bit of time in that state visiting the kids, hunting (Mike) and rounding up cattle on a friends ranch (ME!!) We have 11 grandchildren and they keep us hopping! Paula is an OR tech and lives south of Kalispell and Robin has a new construction cleaning business and lives near Stevensville. Our son, Alan, lives north of Granger and is a computer tech for the Yakima School district. Those of you who were in the Buena Grade School may remember how "horse crazy" I was! Well, I still am. The horses have opened the door into two other fields that I am involved. I no longer show the horses--it's too political, but am quite involved with the sport of mounted drill team. I went to a drill practice with a friend in the fall of 1980 and was immediately hooked. I have ridden with two different teams in the Yakima Valley, the Kuntry Kwik Steppers and Western Express, and for three years coached a team in Monroe, Wa. In 2000 I quit riding as an active member and concentrated on coaching and judging--things I had been doing for a number of years already. In 2003, I became the drill coach for a Sacramento based team, the California Cowgirls, who went on that year to win the Western States Drill Team Championship at the Reno Rodeo in June. In addition, I have been the coach for the ladies team in Ellensburg for the past two years. I have judged mounted drill teams in all of the western states as well as British Columbia. The second horse related field is the sport of endurance riding--competitive distance riding on horseback. In this sport, I compete with my horses. The distances involved--anywhere between 25 and 100 miles in one day--require quite a bit of dedication and conditioning of the rider as well as the horse. I compete mostly in the 25 and 50 miles distances and have seen some awesome country during the rides. 5 years ago I was elected by the riders in the Pacific Northwest to represent them on the national board of directors for the American Endurance Ride Conference. In addition, I put on an endurance ride up in the Nile area of Chinook Pass each year in July. I am looking forward to seeing everyone. |

I remember during my lifetime, hearing people talk of going to their 40 year high school reunion. Of course, I couldn't relate; now I'm one of those people! Yikes! Could we all just slow life down a little? In the Fall of '64, I moved to Kirkland, WA to attend Northwest College. I had very little money and really didn't have an educational goal, but I did own a green '53 Ford that I bought for $350 and a desire to see if I could make it away from home. My sister had moved to Kirkland the year before and I decided if she could make it, I would give it a try. I tried to attend school full time and work enough to pay my living expenses, but by the middle of my second year I was unable to keep up. In the meantime, I met my husband-to-be, Jim Grasley. I dropped out of college to work full time. Jim and I were married April 1, 1967. (We never forget our anniversary date.) By 1978, we had three wonderful children - Angie, Brad and Ryan. In 1982, we were asked to take in (overnight) a pregnant teen age girl because of problems in her home. As a result, we became licensed foster parents. Six months later, her younger sister joined our family. It was a rewarding yet difficult experience. The girls left during the summer of 1984. I wanted to continue helping other children, but not as live-ins, so I returned to college in January, 1985. My goal was to earn a degree in counseling. Because high school was difficult for me both socially and academically, junior college was especially rewarding. I discovered I was capable of doing well academically and really enjoyed learning. I went on to The Evergreen State College where I graduated in 1989. I decided to take a year off and rest from the rigorous schedule I had for four years - juggling school and homework, commuting an hour each way to the college in Olympia, another foster child and my husband and kids. What was I thinking?! However, I wanted to get a masters degree in childhood counseling and hoped to begin in 1990. 1990 was a very life-changing year for me. My father died suddenly of lung cancer. (I met him when I was 23 - he and my mother had separated when I was three and we had no contact with him growing up.) I was not ready to lose him. Shortly after he died, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. My ambitions crumbled. I decided pursuing a masters degree and counseling children would be too difficult physically. In hindsight, I probably could have continued, but I've put that behind me. I have found other ways to work with children and hopefully have been effective somehow. I taught Sunday school at our church for many years, helped staff summer youth camps, and am still active as a bookkeeper for a nonprofit youth organization. In addition, I was very committed to being a mom. One highlight of my life was traveling to Romania with my sister in 1991. We took several boxes of baby formula, powdered milk, medical supplies, books, children's clothing, etc. As a result, we were instrumental in two Romanian children being adopted by close friends. I have had the joy of watching both of them grow up. My husband and I have lived near Buckley, Wa for the past 24 years. We love our home and enjoy a beautiful yard and view of Mt. Rainier. Our daughter and her family live in Pt. Jefferson, Long Island where she is co-owner of a 'chocolate' store called Claire's Confections. Her husband, Jack, is in his final year of radiology residency. We can hardly wait for them to move closer to WA. They have two children-Keegan and Hannah-ages 4 & 2. Brad and his wife Bethany have two boys-Anthony & Levi-ages 2 and 1/2 and 5 months. Brad is a part-time manager for Safeway and part-time pastor/administrator at their church. Bethany works part-time as an LPN. They live nearby. Our youngest, Ryan, moved to LA in January to pursue a career in music. I love to spend time with our grandchildren and enjoy a special relationship with each of them. Although Parkinson's has changed my life, I am very fortunate that it has progressed slowly and that my body has responded well to medication. My trust in God has helped me through many difficult situations and I am grateful for His blessings. |

Where do I start
with this wonderful journey of life. After graduation, I spent 4 years in
the Air Force and married my High School sweetheart from Sunnyside. 35 years
and two wonderful kids later, I divorced. I have a son, Russell, 38, and a
daughter, Jill, 36. They are both happily married and provided me with 5
grandchildren. After the Air Force, I went to work in Seattle for Western
Electric...now Lucent Technologies. After a wonderful career of 28 years, I
took early retirement. I've lived in South California and Chicago (7 years)
for all those years. I graduated from the University of Redlands in
1982....yes, a late bloomer. I worked my way thru many obstacles with a
storybook life. I've always had the good fortune of health and happiness.
I've never missed a day work in 36 years, and never been on any
medications...ever! Nothing else really matters with this good luck. I've
made millions and lost millions, but in the end it doesn't really matter.
